crumpe hearts dumpe fresh
Sep 24th
The great thing about French label Dumpe Fresh is the clothes don’t conform to one genre, subculture or style. The hoodies, jackets, leggings and T-shirts boast animal print, bright colour, metallics and – eik – the occasional fluoro. But all pieces ooze style and coolness. Did someone say Fresh Juice Krew?
banksy on the grind again
Sep 23rd
Bristol graffiti artist Banksy has opted to work in New Orleans for his most recent murals. Over 12 murals illustrating Abraham Lincoln as a homeless man, a girl under an umbrella, a marching band with gas masks and a boy flying a kite fridge; all to coincide with Hurricane Katrina’s third anniversary. Banksy has been quoted as saying, “Three years after Katrina I wanted to make a statement about the state of the clean up operation.” Peep his brilliance here. www.banksy.co.uk
blackalicious fans listen up
Sep 22nd
Quannum couple Gift Of Gab (born Timothy Parker; rapper) and Chief Xcel (born Xavier Mosley; DJ/producer) – aka Blackalicous – hasn’t been able to drop an album since 2005’s The Craft. But crumpet knows all good things happen to those that wait and fans are in for a real treat when the pair re-release Melodica – their first ’93 EP only pressing 2500 hundred copies at the time. crumpet caught up with Gift Of Gab before he hits Australia for the festival season.
“It will be like a ‘then and now’ sort of thing,” gab explains. “This was our first record and this is where were at now. Kind of like you know showcasing the evolution from where we were when we first began to where we are right now, artistically.”

how to feed your brain with creativity… with roots mauva + c-rayz walz

“Listen to lots of classic rap and be open to the international phenomenon, which is bassline culture. There are so many different themes and movements from all over the world. It’s all about being a fan first really,” Roots Manuva.
Slime & Reason is out now through Big Dada/Inertia
“I’m tortured by my eyes, ears, and my mind. I can’t forget what I’ve seen and felt. It spills out of my soul. I am also a very truthful person and I love growth so I keep gaining styles and insight for the next thought before I think it. I don’t have enough skills to be fake or wack so sometimes I wonder if I’m really dope or not? ahhahaahahahahahah,” C-Rayz Walz.

What the fuck has happened to battle rapping in Australia? Going to a battle used to be a highlight, a display or real freestyle ability and clever flips of lyrical attacks. All of a sudden it seems all entrants have a copy of Gay & Yo Mama Jokes For Dummies and they’re thrashing it hard. They’re a few fantastic battle emcees left in the country, but they rarely bother to enter the battles anymore and when they do the fans totally miss the point of what they are saying. A brilliant 16 bar verse leading up to one punch will get a murmur while someone saying, “You are like the fat gay version of the 40 Year Old Virgin” tears the fucking house down. Perhaps what is most frustrating is with the prizes that are now on offer these artists will put out music as sub par as the first EP Justice and Kaos dropped. I think it’s time for a mandatory five hour video session of classic battles and a gay joke limit per battle be introduced to contracts given to each contestant. The sanity of attendees demands it.
Cheesy battle rappers, you have been pimp slapped.

Support Australian hip hop has become somewhat of a battle cry in this country, it is something I am passionate about myself, but it is also fucking stupid. I’m one of the biggest supporters of Australian hip hop I know and the growth of the scene is my passion and this is why the support Australian hip hop chant pisses me off. Why limit it by classifying it as some form of special ed child that needs extra help to succeed. Oh look here comes little oz hip hop with a limp better give it a head start. Fuck that, support it because it’s dope and if it’s wack call that shit regardless of where it came from. Our best is world class, as good as anything I hear annually from around the globe, but our worst much like that from overseas, makes stabbing your groin with a letter opener to stop the ear pain seem appealing. Keep your ears open and search out our own, but don’t be afraid to call a spade a fucking wack local artist.

electro for your inner b-boy
Sep 3rd

Before electro became that rubbish they pump in mainstream clubs where questionable dudes wear V neck tees and ladies rock fluoro rubbish it was the music of the b-boy. This compilation is the first of what became a cherised collection of releases mixed by Herbie Laidley. Find yourself some cardboard and get your break on to the sounds of 1983.

Mainstream journalists were for so long not a part of Australian hip hop, unfortunately that is all changing and quite frankly they need to check themselves. It would take roughly 12 seconds to open Google and enter an artist’s name and read up on them but no, instead we get the same recycled bullshit over and over from journalists who clearly don’t give a fuck. Rather than toss Judy from accounts the CD so that the “journalists” can continue scouring facebook or copying and pasting from a celebrity blogger, put some fucking effort into the phenomenal talent that is out there. We are all aware the Hoods are the biggest group in Australia but you are insulting them as much as every other group when you continually mention them in every fucking article. Shit I’d rather read mainstream US papers demonisation of acts complete with devil ears added in MS paint to pictures of NaS. Music isn’t there only when it can help make your owner richer.
Mainstream journalists, you have been pimp slapped.
